loud clunking

This is pretty basic and not meant to be insulting, but you have checked that the wheel is properly seated and the lugs are accurately torqued, right?

Has your car ever been in a front end accident? Either way, check ball joints. I got a helluva clunk with a ball joint where the axle thing coming out of the ball joint had actually bent. As it flopped around it would make the entire front suspension shift and it would clunk really loud. Tie rod ends, too, check those.
That was way back when in my 78 Bonnie. Yes, I said 78 Bonnie.

Generally when ball joints and tie rod ends are worn, there'* tons of play in them. If you are able to raise the car from the frame, letting the front suspension hang, you can get in there and grab the parts and tug like hell on them. The best way to know is to play with both a worn joint and a new joint out of the car. Maybe if you go to a suspension shop, they'll let you examine a worn one that they pull off a car. It'* pretty obvious though, they either fit all nice and snug, or they're worn like crazy and rattle around. Rattling around is BAD. There should be no play in them at all. A new one should be pretty stiff. I replaced my own tie rod ends and pitman arm in my old `78. While the suspension is totally different in our modern cars, tie rod ends and ball joints are pretty much timeless.

Ya I've had the wheel off and had my hands at 6 and 12 and 3 and 9 the wheel seems tight there is nothing loose, but its while its under pressure thats when I get that loud clunk usually when I back out of my driveway and turn the wheel to the left and when I start off turning the wheel to the right ,the crazy thing about it all is that it will do it a couple of times when I first start out then stop and not do it for an hour later then go away again, and it would do it when I turn right, left and the odd time going staight.
