I've not heard of bearings rusting from a car sitting for any length of time *inside* a garage. That said, it doesn't rule out the possibility of bad bearings on a 150,000 mile car. But the bearings typically let you know they're bad by a tell-tale "scrub, scrub, scrub" sound when you're taking a turn at speed. Replacing our front bearings involves replacing the front wheel hubs.

I agree you should go with tire balancing and I'd recommend 4 wheel alignment as well. Other possibilities include warped brake rotors and bad struts.

Hi there...Welcome to the club.

As one of the resident gearheads.. I'd like to point out that there are many good suggestions above.

As well... we like to suggest the free or cheaper more common items first.

For example..not knowing the car ... you are unsure what is happening. If available jack up the car and follow the advice Gonneville mentions of putting your hands at 12 and 6 wiggle, then 3 and 9 wiggle. Report back any play.

If you aren't comfortable with that..then take it in to a tire shop. Have them rotate and balance the tires. Also ask if they can check for suspension wear meaning the wiggling like we just mentioned.

Your description of the problem is pretty vague and doesn't give us much to go on... let'* start off with the recommendations..check steering/suspension and tire balance. Report back your findings and we'll go further if necessary.

BTW..I've never heard of bearing rusting in a garage in a 3 month timeframe.

They won't look into balance/suspension issues unless you specifically mention it and ask them to do so.

I'm sure they'll do it if you ask.. I would also expect an extra charge for the added work.

or, take it to a tire place and have them road test it! i don't understand why we're still throwing ideas and suggesting he go to a tire shop and tell THEM what to do. it'* obvious he doesn't know what is causing the vibration, so go to someone that DOES know. an alignment isn't going to fix any vibration, why suggest it? sure, it'* a good idea. i'll give you that much. but this is about FIXING HIS VIBRATION.

and an added charge to check out a vibration? sure, if you go to a dealership. i've preached about this in previous threads, but FIND A TRUSTED INDEPENDENT SHOP and you'll be SO much more satisfied.

Can someone in the Philly area suggest a good shop for him to go to?

In the meantime, I'm moving this to 92-99. Mechanical problems belong there, not in General Chat.

no. have them rediagnose the vibration. and take it somewhere other than sears.
