intermittent a/c compressor noise
My a/c compressor on my 96 SE is ocassionally making a noise and producing little shavings. Odd thing is, when it does it, you can turn on the air and it will stop making the noise. It doesn't do it all the time, just some times. Should I replace the compressor, or will it eventually stop doing this? The part about turning it on and it makes it stop is baffling. Any help on this is appreciated.

you're in the death throws of your clutch. It'* important to get it replaced quickly - if not, it can damage the compressor seals due to the friction heat it generates when not engaged. Leaving the AC on won't aleve the problem for long because it cycles on/off as part of normal operation. Eventually, the clutch won't be able to engage due to the fact it'* eating itself alive, and then it will really start to heat up. That repair is mucho more $$. I had it happen to me - ended up with a $500 repair instead of a $200 clutch-only repair because I didn't get it fixed soon enough.
