How to drop the whole subframe?
#11
I figured this would be a good thread.
I need to get the side cover off of my trans in the 95 Regal to replace the parking pawl/pinion rod. Is there any science to removing the subframe? Or should it be relatively easy? How much does this thing weigh?

Most find they can lower that side of the frame and get the pan off. The pawl will be right there in plain view.
The subframe on the Bonne is heavy...it'* a beast, the Regal should be a little lighter, although I'm not familiar with the 95 one.

Just trying to figure out what I'm in for. I'll be doing this in a garage, and I'll be supporting my engine using a 4x4 across my engine bay and some truck straps, but I'm not yet sure what to do with the subframe. I don't know how to lower it, or how to raise it back up short of buying 3 floor jacks.

You could use a jack stand or anything to hold one side up. easiest way to support it up a bit is to lift and put one of the balljoint nuts on a couple of threads. Then the other side can be lifted to do nearly the same. One jack could be used to give it the last bit it needs.
On the truck straps..I'd probably suggest picking up 2-3 feet of chain. It'* cheap insurance against problems. Afterall..you'll be under it.

Thanks for the tip btw.
