Default Is it dying?

Hi everyone. I was driving my car today and it started to shake really badly in front after about 10 miles going 45-55. When I pulled over to check things out, it was idling badly, and smoking from the exhaust and from where the exhaust pipe hooks to the engine. There is a terrible gas smell coming from the exhaust, or from somewhere, and it feels like it is going to just die. In park it will idle really badly for a minute or two, and then idle faster, and then back to irregular idle again. Does this sound like anything? I can't figure it out. It seems to me something has gone bad in the engine. Could it be something simple? I sure hope so. I appreciate any advice out there

The smoke from the manifolds is almost certainly valve cover gaskets leaking or intake leaking. as far as the rough idle, not sure without seeing it.

All that rough idle and shaking could be possible engine misfiring.

Is the smoke coming out white?? If it is white when it is probobly a leaky intake gasket, those are prone to leak. The whitness is the steam and the smell is the coolent. Trust me if you have ever smelt old coolant you would recognize the smell.. :? Sorry for the bad noooze.

Well, somehow it has gone away again. I don't know how that is possible, but I am happy for the moment. Thanks for the help. I am going to check on a few things to try and prevent this from happening again.
