For what it'* worth, this is now fixed. I took it back to the dealership and they replaced the power steering pump (that they'd just put on a couple weeks ago) with a new one (under warranty) and now the problem is gone.

I must have got a bad power steering pump. The new one is fine now.

i actually had the same exact situation occur. they replaced a pump because i lost power steering....it still didnt work perfectly all the time. i took it back and the diagnosis was to just get another pump and its worked fine for years. must be something about the ps pumps on those cars.
