Default Check Engine Light

I know I know, you guys want those codes... in due time I will have those. First please preview http://www.bonnevilleclub.com/forum/...ic.php?t=22719 if you don't know whats going on.
k, here goes, got the fuel pump issue fixed and now the check engine light is coming on.
1. Before fuel pump went bad, car ran fine, NO CEL
2. After fuel pump went, dealership diagnosed bad fuel pump(we know different now)
3. Found bad ground in driverside wire bundle(fixed it)
4. Reinstalled everything, reconnected battery, car starts fine, idles fine, then after about 10 seconds, CEL comes on.
When codes are stored in computer, are they permanent, or can they be cleared by disconnecting the battery? Did I miss something or did the dealership try to do a f***keroo on me by doing something to my car hoping to get more money? Thanks again guys,
Mike
