Mine goes to defrost vents/floor if I'm climbing a hill or accelerating for a while. Loss of vacuum reserve allows the vents to default to the defrost/floor position. Can't remember if the temp mix door is or not.

not sure if it applies to our cars or not, but i know riding in other cars the a/c would briefly cut out {or go to lower vents like jwikoff said} under heavy acceleration or when climbing a steep hill so that the engine can get the power to do what it needs

That particular problem never occurred before
I would tend to believe that it may be a vacuum problem, at least I hope so. I really don't feel like ripping the dash apart .
The decrease in airflow under acceleration or going up hill is NOT something that the car did from day 1, it is a recently occuring problem.
Other than the A/C problem and the possiblity that the sunroof drain tubes are clogged or disconnected and there is a slight leak into the passenger compartment and staining the headliner, the car is in really good shape with under 70,000 miles.
I would hate to have to get rid of the car, it really rides nice.

Most likely you are losing vacuum and it is defaulting to defrost/floor. Can you check this and let us know. It will help with which steps you should take next.

OK, where might I look for the vacuum canister
1996 Bonneville SLE
and anyone have any pics of it?
Oh and BTW n another thread about cleaning the Evap coil... Be careful... very, very Careful.... you may end up putting too much water in and it may go through the floor vents and soak your rugs...
It happened to me... Good thing I have a wet vac and its gonna be ninety today :(

Evap cleaning
i jsut did the evap cleanign and while cleanign i noticed on the can do not inhale vapors from this product they are harmful.... lol yeah thats why im putting it in my a/c vents lol. But i guess if u clean it out with the hose real good and let it dry it shouldn't be harmful. How many people did the cleanign and found a difference in airflow?
