What'* an air gap? just the amount of clearance that should be between the clutch plate and whatever it grabs onto?
Is this something that I/my parents should just have the dealer work on/look at?
I have access to jack stands but that'* about it along the lines of getting the car off the ground.

The air gap is the distance between the two clutch faces. GM compressors are bad to go out of adjustment because they use a press fit, to control the gap, instead of shims.
The dealership or any good garage can adjust the air gap in a few minutes without removing any parts.
