Unhappy 97 Bonniville Tranny reverse hesitation

Thanks in advance for you time and help. I have a 97 Bonneville SSE. It has 220K miles on it. After sitting overnight, when you put it in reverse it does not move. If I move it down through the gears and then back to reverse it will kick in. The problem only happened a couple of times over about 6 months but now it does it all the time after it sits for a while. Also the other day I came to a rolling stop to turn left and the car acted like it was in neutril for a split second and then went into gear. I took it to a trusted mechanic and he changed the fluid and filter but did not see anything wrong. My guess is it is time for a new tranny, but thought I would make sure there is nothing else to check. I do not plan on putting a tranny in it. It is just not worth it to me.

thanks again

Troy

Troy..

When it does the reverse thing, does it grab in the forward gears if you selected them? I'm trying to see if it'* all gears or just reverse.

The input piston and seal are known to wear over time and this causes a leakage. Which in turn could cause you to have no gears.

When i put it in reverse to back out of the garage it does it. I move the gear shift to N then D then 2 then 1. Once I get to 1 i can usually feel it pop into first. Then it works just fine. I just made a 6 hour round trip tonight with it and it ran great. It is only after it sits overnight that it does this. So, I guess to answer your question none of the gears I go through work until I get down to first. Thanks for your help.

It sat outside last night because we bought a new truck for my wife to drive. It got down to 7 degrees F. Started the car this morning and let it run a couple of minutes. I moved it through all the gears several times before it finally went into gear. I'm assuming the cold weather made the issue worse.

That'* likely a seal or something that needs some heat to swell.

So is there anything to do other than a rebuild? That is a little over my ability. How long do you think it will keep going? Is there any aditive that would help?
