Hello

Update.

After air filter, oil filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, clean sensors, and a new PCV valve the shudder is still there.
I also checked the coil packs and there resistance is okay.
So getting closer to the transmission as the problem.
Today I bought a bottle of Lucas transmission treatment, it is thick and gloppy rather then a thin conditioner. I will see if this makes any difference.

Next would be a tranny cooler. Although from reading some post'* this probably won't help either. Perhaps I will save my money...

If I install the cooler do you put it in series of the factory cooler or on a seperate circuit? If it is in series is it the top or bottom line that is returning to the cooler. No use putting the cooler on the outlet... cooling it down only to have the stock cooler heat it back up.
Where is a good place to mount the cooler??

I really believe that a TCC solonoid should last longer the 3 years, I cannot believe that this would be the problem. GM changed it under warranty and now 3 years later I would have to change it again (On my coin) . Aghhh cars evil of the world.

Perhaps it is time to remove a bolt and reinstall a new car.

A tranny cooler WILL help you.... I'm surge-free as long as the temp is around 90 or less. I also have a bottle of Lucas transmission fix that I need to dump in and see if it helps. Do I need to drop the tranny pan and drain some fluid out before putting this bottle in? Keep brainstorming, especially you guys who know about these transmissions. There has to be an answer somewhere.

Mike, I just re-read this post, and it occurred to me that the speed and corresponding RPM you listed seems fairly close to normal. When I'm running 72-73mph the engine usually turns 2200-2300 RPM according to my gauge. If your TC was not locked it seems you would be turning much higher RPM at that speed.

It may be possible that the TC was locked but you've been experiencing more and more slip in the converter. I'm not sure, because I don't know exactly how torque converters work. Does anybody else have thoughts on this?

Also, how'* your mileage been Mike?

You may have too much TC slippage

That temperature is what I noticed. Yesterday driving anytime the the temp gauge got over 90F it would start to surge. This was before the lucas treatment. I haven't really had a chance to test the lucas stuff yet.

With regards to your tranny cooler,,,, could you please give me a brief explanation as to how you put it in.
Did you use it in series with the stock cooler or did you disconnect the cooler in the rad??
Did you mount the cooler on the front of the rad or between engine and rad?
I live in the great white north and need to be certain I get a cooler with an automatic bypass, I would assume getting the oil to cold is not good for the tranny.
If you put it in series did you disconnect the top or bottom line of the stock rad cooler??

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I put mine in series with the stocker and mounted it in front of the radiator. If you order one online or go to Autozone or O'Reillys you'll get some handy instructions inside the box. I did a little searching here on BC, but I mainly just followed the recommendations that came with the cooler.

As for the automatic bypass, I'm afraid I can't help you. I know nothing about a device like this.

When I hooked it up in series, I put the auxilliary cooler after the stock one, so I unhooked the return line of the stocker. The return line is the top line coming out of the passenger side. I sent a line from there to the aux. cooler, then piped the return line of the aux. cooeler into the metal line that runs back to the tranny. If that'* a little confusing, I'll try to explain it differently. Also, I'll try to get some pics up if you'd like 'em.

EDIT: By the way, I think my cooler is a Hayden 404. They rate the coolers (at least here in the States) by GVW cooling capacity. Mine can handle something like 24,000 lb. GVW or something like that, which is considered a cooler for a light truck. You'll probably want a cooler that can handle 18,000 GVW minimum. Most major brands should be fine... Hayden, B&M, Derale, Perma-Cool, etc.

Having a surging problem on the 40th anni SE I'm looking to buy. My Godfather worked as head mech for Pontiac for 30 years and he'* helping me out at the dealership he works at now. Gonna get the computer plugged in and scan it. It feels more like an ignition problem to me though. There'* no shuddering, fluttering, etc. Just when it'* about 65mph and you lightly add gas to get up to 70mph, the engine starts lightly surging about 400rpms. Feels like somethings leaning out in the engine and causing misfire. I'll report back, keep fingers crossed its nothing big so I can get it! Oh and when I try to rev the engine in Neutral, it seems to misfire really bad, I can't get a smooth rev sound above 4000rpms, would that be ignition? or are they just like that? (come on the Tempo could rev to redline with a nice smooth sound).

I'm pretty sure that'* the rev limit when in Park or Neutral. At least it better be. Mine has always done the same thing, lol.

Yeah, it'* the rev limiter.
