Surging with the TTC lockup
With some more thought given to threads above that refer to "step on the brake and problem goes away" l believe their problem would be from the engine running poor.
Reason I say this is because they indicate the problem seems to disappear when torque convertor unlocks from pressing the brake.
When the TCC lockup mode is engage the engine is essentially locked to the input shaft of the transmission. If the engine starts running rough the vibration / chuggles / surging would manifest themselves in the driveline.
So,
For those of you when you press the brake and problem seems to clear I would look towards engine issues.
For the others - who press the brakes and problem remains I would lean towards transmission issues.
For either problem don't start changing parts without first checking basics often overlooked:
Good grounds, fluid levels, bad ignition wires, plugged vacuum lines, connectors seated well, corroded connections, shorts, pinched wires, etc.

The more I read these lines, the more confused I become with the problem.
Tapping the brake is disconecting the tcc from lock up. Perhaps it is disengaging overdrive which is perhaps slipping.
Last week I disconected the vacume line to the vacume control module. The shifting became harsh, yet clean. There was no surging through the driving range, and in conditions which it normaly would.
However, on the interstate runs the OD was not engaged.
This makes me wonder if the overdrive lockup is giving me problems.

I'll weigh in another two cents... I think it'* been reasonably shown that some of these problems could be something other than ignition. Some of the symptoms seem to describe problems other than ignition system things. Maybe for some it is ignition. There are probably many problems that have similar symptoms, and we can't pinpoint a specific cause for any certain symptom. Just a thought. I've all but abandoned this thread because I have developed more pressing mechanical issues, but it would be nice to flesh out some things within this topic.

I am more and more convinced it is a trans problem of some sort. That increases with temp. When cold it will not do the surging. But, will get worse as the temp increases, and slight increase on the accelarator. A simple bump to the brake will stop it. A heavy punch to the accelarator will reduce it, and almost eleiminate it.
Recently when cold, put into drive I could easily tell the trans was slipping. I have yet to determine if this is the trans or torque converter.
Time will tell, and I will keep reading. :?

mine has the same problems you are mentioning, but it still sputters in nuetral. I can not imagine it still being a trans problem in this case. or am I mistaken?

Well, time for an update to this old thread. Next weekend I'll be able to finally test my theory about aftermarket PCMs. My Intense unit will arrive this week and I'll be swapping it in by next Sunday. We'll know once and for all if putting a different PCM in the car gets rid of the surging problem. This post is a little premature, but I wanted to get the word out. I'll keep everyone posted.

Yes, it does. Quote from www.intense-racing.com
I'm eager to get through college finals this week (argh!) and test it out. If you look back a page or two within this thread there is a computer procedure that can supposedly be done to remedy the TC situation. If this Intense PCM fixes the problem, you might want to investigate that procedure if you don't feel like buying an aftermarket unit. But alas, we get ahead of ourselves....
- In some cases, your PCM may use an operating system that isn't the most recent one available (see http://calid.gm.com for details). In these cases, we'll update you to the latest OEM code, then apply our changes. We use GM Service Programming System (SPS) for monthly updates.

Well, I'll update this because I said I would.... lol.
After a week of driving with the Intense PCM, I haven't had any surging issues. I even had a situation where the car was cruising at 60 mph in overdrive and I hit a long, sustained, uphill grade. The motor pulled the car all the way up the hill (which lasted at least 8-10 seconds) without downshifting or unlocking the torque converter, and it didn't surge in the least bit.
HOWEVER... I think reliable results will need to wait until warmer weather. If the surging problems are related to heat in the transmission/torque converter, it would only stand to reason that they would disappear during a cold winter in Iowa. I'm pleased with the results so far, but don't rush out and buy a new PCM just yet!
By the way, is anybody in a cold climate still experiencing this surging problem since the onset of winter?

tcc lockout
Hey guys I'm kinda new here. I have a 94 Bonneville SE, I have been reading this thread for some time now, I too have the same problem with the gurgling tcc locking out....My symtoms are just like a few of you all in here at about 40mph and up I get the gurgling noise associated with a slight vibration when it is in tcc lock up, then if I drive it in the hiway for a while I loose 4th gear and tcc altogether, recently I bought a scan tool to see I could try and shed some light on the subject and it appears that the problem is heat, the scan tool revealed 2 codes
1) p0713
2) p0740
those mean trans. temp too high & tcc circuit failure I'm thinking that the trans is getting too hot, causeing the computer to default making me loose 4th and tcc, I'm thinking this cause I actually sat in my car while it was running and watched the trans temp on the scan tool and it reached well above 300*F, so I installed an auxilliary cooler to suppliment the rad, so far as I can tell it hasnt really helped much, but I installed the cooler today and havent really taken it out for a long cruise yet, if that doesnt do the trick I'll just bypass the radiator and put a really bigger cooler in it instead, it could also be the temp sensor it self, but I know the heat plays a big part in the resistance of the solenoids, as far as the gurgleing noise I did a flush a few weeks ago, and that seemed to help quiet it down abit till the tranny gets warm. I hope I helped someone in here, I know I'm getting damn tired of this tcc problem, I'll solve it if it kills me
