One more question? Can we tell by this tag which transmission this is and if it will follow the program of the PCM? Thanks

I believe your final gear ratio on that should be 3.29. The police/taxi Impala came with that ratio.

I'm pretty sure the police package was not offered supercharged.

Don't toss out that subframe. One of your local W body guys would love to buy it from you. Those are sought after.

These replies hit it pretty good. I am almost convinced that I cannot use it. I do believe that I will try to pull the 4T60-E with the bad engine and check things out where the light is better.

Oh, and thanks for your tips, I told my trusted mech of the job and asked if he could do the pcm tuning. He does not have the equipment since GM has them priced out of range for his shop. He will tho', release the pipe from the headers for me, I have never had any luck getting co-operation from those nuts. Maybe I'll try again Tues night. And then it'* "follow the directions Ern, it'* easy."

I started taking down the ruined engine Tues. Hope to replace it this weekend, having no confidence that it will be an 8 hr day, I have Mon. and Tues. to button her up. That would make the job a one weeker. HaHaHa But I am taking a lot of reference pics. Seems that the previous driver had a ton of issues under the hood. There is blue tape on the wiring and on the vacume lines. So I would like to ask, with a used motor that has unknown sit time, what would be an oil to apply through the spark plug hole to lubricate the cylinder walls for the initial turnover? O'h, and I took the car to trusted mech, he hoisted her up and wrenched the two nuts manifold loose for me.

Here is a picture of the hassle you guys put up with many more times than I hope that I ever have to. Seen are the alt. bolts, the pwr. steering bolts and the heater thing-a-madoodle bolts. This is some sort of a chore boy but so far I am still enjoying working on my new bonny. I haven't had so much fun since I replaced the LIM and UIM gaskets (on the '93) some time ago.

Hey Boost, Dan and others, did you see that oily mess of an engine bay? Black??? Wow, then you haven't seen nothin' yet. The everything below aera is oozing texas sweet crude. I do not know where it came from exactly but from all your comments I would lean toward total gasket failure on the heads? Which according to some of you would cause the meltdown of the bearings, leading up to catastrophic failure of this engine. So I will have to clean the whole area. Any suggestions on what not to do and what to possibly use? I am parked on my lawn (read outdoor parking area). HaHaHa So while I am wrecking it already, I hope not to cause permanent damage to it. Thanks Boost for the programing help, I saw some where that the two years have two separate ways of communicating with the transmission, maybe even something that you commented on or SSEi97. Anyway the trans in the car has a vacume solenoid? while the newer one with many less miles, doesn't, a deal breaker, I thinks. So thanks again my experienced friends. As time allows I will continue to search links related to my poor parked Bonnie. O'h and I found a pair of wires behind the lights, near the airbox which had apparently been broken/burnt off. The ends were green, so not a recent incident. Light wire inside a eight inch loom, one reddish with a black line along it and the other black. Any ideas that would help me straighten this issue out? Thanks all.

Started following your directions, Bill and I got as far as the two bolts on the passenger side of the engine bay. About broke a thumb hitting it multiple times while under the car getting the two torque axis nuts mentioned first, the horizonal ones. Then came the other two which caused me to quit for the day. Tried electric impact, WD40, heat, Gunk nut buster with absolutely no success and then folded it up, put it away and hope that the Gunk will get it overnight. I am ready to separate the trans from the engine. The reason that I do not ask my neighbors for help became very apparent tonight when I was leaning on the impact for some time they showed up to "see if they could help. After I explained the dirty to them, one of them said, " boy, you sure do not have much room there, I would take out that radiator, get it out of the way or you might lose it you know" I almost was glad they came, it was so funny. I told them that I would think about it. One of them was the guy who earlier had said that his buddy was talking to another guy and they thought that the only way out for that engine was through the bottom. I did about fall over then but I politely explained that my mentors are gearheads and Bonneville modifyers and that they pull these engines all the time through the top and I told him that I am confident that this engine will easily come out that way. He left looking skeptical but the best thing was that he left. So I am having a reasonable good time, the frustration comes with the territory so I cuss a lot and pick up a different wrench and go at it. The killer today, the absolute killer was the transmission to engine mount that had to be completely removed to get the reverse transmission bolt, which I wish the rest were as easy. Had no problem seeing it, getting to it or removing it. I just know that putting it back is going to be a challenge, o'h boy. So that'* it until Sunday morning when we hit it again. I say we cause you guys are with me in spirit and all my buds have wished me good luck with that and several will help when I ask so I am looking forward to tomorrow, see what can get done then. See ya.
