Default 95 SE CEL, Still a Mystery!

I posted a couple weeks ago about the CEL on my 95 SE, and after taking it to an independent repair shop they have found that they cannot communicate with the computer.

The car has an ODB-II connector but the sticker on the hood says "ODB-I Compliant". Previous attempts at using a scan tool were unsuccessful.

After spending two hours on the car (for only $32.50!) the tech said that there must be either a grounded module in the loop, or a break in the data link line. His next steps are to start disconnecting things to see where the problem is. Now keep in mind all this only to find out why the CEL is coming on to begin with.

So at $65/hour is it worth letting them run loose on it, disconnecting the PCM, HVAC, etc all one at a time, then possibly having to trace the wires? I am still of the opinion that an ODB-II scanner will never read this car. So if that'* the case won't I be wasting money trying to find out why not???

You have an OBD-1 computer. Mechanic is not familiar with 94-95 GM cars. You need a 16-pin cable with an OBD-1 scan tool.

I don't recall the trouble code - what was it again?

No trouble code, that is what I am trying to get scanned.

Tech, and the guys at auto parts store say there is no such thing as ODB-I computer with ODB-II 16 pin connector. Connector is definitely ODB-II -- I have successfully connected them, but they cannot "link up".

This car is driving me nuts. It'* undrivable (due to surging gettign worse) and I can't even find out what'* wrong with it. Getting frustrated...thanks for any help!

I think you need a different autoparts store than. Fuddyduddy is correct 95 has an OBD II connector but a OBD I computer.

So is it possible to jumer to connections and get the SES (Service Engine Soon) light to flash the codes or do we need a true scan tool?

1993 was the last year of the "flash" feature on the CEL. 94 and up require a scantool to extract codes.
