94 SE Steeering Column Question
Hi Guys,
first off, awesome forum. I'm a long time member of a jeep forum and I must say this place rivals that in terms of good info.
now, as for my question. I'm busy trying to replace the mounting bracket for the turn signal switch on my Dad'* 94 SE. apparently we're not the only ones who have seen this thing break judging by the threads I've found on it. anyway that went smooth enough, but upon reassembly we found that the steering wheel now has quite a bit of play in it, in every direction. not rotational play, up and down, side to side play. digging through the internet i found this diagram
the part i have a question about is number 15. it'* listed as the Upper Bearing Inner Race Seat. when we reassembled the column we placed the upper bearing spring (9) into the seat and proceeded to assemble the column again. unfortunately neither of us paid enough attention to the orientation of the seat and I'm wondering if we don't have it in upside down. can anyone tell me if the "tabs" on the one side of the seat ride against the inner race, get driven between the inner race and the shaft, or if they "cup" the bearing spring to keep it centered against the race? i can't really tell from the diagram and none of the info sources i have available do more than mention that it needs to be removed to change the bearing. none of them mention orientation. thanks!
