Ok, Bill said everything that I was gonna say, but I didn't see this asked yet.
The noise, does it get louder or stay consist with the engine speed? Or go away?

I would also say that you need to check the flexplate bolts, or possibly the Torque Converter bolts. I just fixed this on a friends S10 4.3, he thought he had a rod knocking.

The TC bolts coming loose is a common problem on GM'*. I cracked my flywheel on my pick up, had them come loose. The car I haven't had any of those issues with YET. **Fingers crossed**

Just to clarify - there are 8 bolts that hold the flex plate to the end of the crankshaft. There are 3 bolts that hold the flex plate to the torque converter. I don't know if it is possible to get at the flex plate / crank bolts with the engine and trans still attached. Anyway, if either set of bolts are loose, a heavy knocking sound could result.
