4T60-E rebuild Woes
Hey guys a couple questions.
1. So I started torquing down the oil pump and about halfway through I heard a loud popping noise and realize the cover is now cracked. I'm wondering if this happened because I torqued the bolts too much, or if the unit itself is weak. I want to prevent this from happening again when I purchase a new one. The ATSG manual says to start in the center and and torque the bolts to 10 ft-lbs in a spiral pattern. I assumed that meant circular, like clockwise. Does spiral actually mean criss-cross?
2. So after I re assembled all the rotating parts, I checked my pan and realized I still had a bearing and a washer remaining! Doh. This might be a longshot, but does anybody happen to know where they go?
Thanks everybody

I have actually had that cover off before...many times. I can't see how one can crack that unless it was not perfectly flush to begin with. Could have been a pump vane binding up. Who knows, but somebody from up above was telling you to replace it anyway because I see a really nice groove worn into the cover anyway.
Your waiting on a pump cover now, so you might as well take everything back apart again. Those are thrust washers. Go through the tear down section of the manual, CIRCLE in RED where all the washers are, and tear yours down. ACCOUNT for every washer as you tear it back down.
Did you find plastic pieces that resemble a thrust washer in the bottom of the pan? Yep, it was another washer. Hope you ordered another one.

I think I figured out that the bearing and washer go between the second gear and input clutch drum, the washer is for setting the end play.. which probably explains why the 4th gear apply snapped up after I tried to bolt it to the crossover plate

So the new pump cover came in, but I am a little hesitant to install it. Mike do you mind taking a look at this video before I try to fasten it?

I'm not sure if this may work or not, but in my 4T60-E manual, when re-installing the pump, its reinstalled as one unit. As in, the pump cover is already placed on top of the pump, then the pump is installed onto the valve body.

that is how I had originally installed it when it cracked the first time. I would assume that the cover should fit right on top of the pump itself without any gap :-/

Something is not allowing the entire pump assembly to sit evenly.
Ok, try this. Remove the pump drive shaft and see if the cover will sit on it ok.

Discovered that the rotor was upside down. Got in out of town this evening, flipped it. Now it sits evenly and the shaft no longer binds!

Glad you got it figured out. Nothing like trying to figure out a jigsaw puzzle via the internet. LOL.
