What'* happening with the Security light? When you put the key in, turn it to ON.
The light should come onfor about 5 secds and then go out. Is it coming on at all?
The security VATS might have been bypassed with an aftermarket theft alarm.... or remote starter installation. If I understand the method, the shops put a resistor pack jumper into the connector at the base of the steering column to replace the resistor in the key. Therefore your car has the VATS always bypassed. You might look at that connector to see if you find a jumper across. Maybe someone here has a picture of a jumped connector to post?
The other option is the VATS theft deterrent module has failed in the mode that allows everything to work (like my car). But that will show with no security light or the light is always on (or on or off at will like mine!).
The ignition key would have to be ON for a start to occur. If your ignition switch was leaving the power to the ignition ON, you'd be finding the battery run down.
I'm with the folks about checking for a remote start system having been installed and activated by UFOs or something....

Anywayz, I'd really make sure there'* no remote start or something non-oem in there like even an alarm with ignition cut-off that'* aftermarket? And yeah, I agree, damn unsafe if you plan on working on the car. D/C that battery and start checking everything.

On topic - Ask your neighbors to try their remote starts around your car if they have em. My lights go on and off on their own
