I agree so I guess I need to bite the bullet and get them replaced. The car has 250,000 and I have no idea when any of these parts were last replaced. I will update when I get the results. Thaks

If you are getting strong pressure at the rail then I would not swap out the pump and strainer etc. Thats a lot of coin. When you let the car sit, say for overnight, and you push on the fuel rail schrader valve, do you get a strong spray of gas? If so, your pump is probably ok. I'm not a mechanic, just my thoughts.

Ok, believe it or not I am still having the same issue. Due to other projects I had to put this one on hold for a while.
Here is what has been done since last posting:
Replaced the fuel filter and fuel pump went to start the car and it would not crank so I pulled the plugs and found antifreeze in the cylinders so I replaced the upper phlenum and the lower intake lower intake gasket. Tried to start car and still had the same issue with it starting and then dying within seconds. I messed around with the cam sensor wires and plug and to my surprise it started, so I thought I had found the culprit. I ordered new cam sensor, crank sensor and the cam sensor plug wire and replaced. I did not replaced the crank sensor plug at that time. The car started and ran sitting in the driveway so I went for a drive and on my way back the check engine light came on and as I was pulling into my drive it died and would not start. Back to the same problem with start and die. I checked the code with my actron scanner and the code was a P0629 pass key frequency code. I have the OBD 1.5 so not sure that code is really acurate. I have rechecked the fuel pressure it is around 45 psi and the pump runs and primes when key is turned on. I did buy a noid light to check the fuel injection and found that when you crank the engine over the light flashes and as soon as the car starts they stop flashing. What would stop the fuel injectors from pulsing besides the cam and crank sensors? What else am I missing? BTW- I have ordered a new plug to replace the crank sensor plug, but not sure that is going to fix it. Thank you for your input...

if its talking about a vats failure, it seems the signal from the tdm to the pcm isnt getting there or in the pcm. it shuts down the injectors for a vats fail.

you could check for it at the pcm. its a square wave so you cant see if its right but you should be able to see if you get something vs nothing with a regular meter

If VATS is causing the problem you could always bypass it totally.
Here is a bypass that should work, it says it works for all Pontiac'* from 89 to 02 that originally had the black resistor pellet in the metal part of the ignition key.
