What size is the Harmonic Balancer Bolt?
#23
1 1/8 thats the size socket that best fit the Harmonic Balancer bolt on a 1988 Vin "C" engine. I tried a 28mm ( to small) 29mm (looser than the SAE 1 1/. So I guess I will try busting it loose with the 1 1/8 SAE. if any body knows any different please chime in. Thanks for all the replies.

Are there two different balancer bolts ? Just checked my '88 C 3800 and it takes a 15/16" (24 mm might fit but is a touch larger) the same as the 90 "C" and 92 "L". These are all believed to be stock.
According to the parts book the bolt is a 3/4-16, 2.73" long for the "C", 3.10" for the "L". See grp 0.662 so would expect SAE (inch) wrenches to fit.
And just for *&G I just checked a high-milage (balancer likely to have been replaced) '88 "C" and that bolt is different - 1 1/8" socket fits properly - so possibky a replacement.

Yikes!! just went to the GM parts dealer in town and they are asking $ 23.00 bucks for the 1 1/8" (TTY) harmonic balancer bolt. Anybody know if I can use a 15/16/harmonic balancer bolt (no mention of TTY in manual in 90 manual) from the junk yard to replace this bolt.
Also inquired about the timing chain tensioner both dealer and Auto Zone asked if I had a chamfered or counterbored bolt hole. I want to get all the parts before teardown so I can get it right back on the road. Anybody know if an 88 C is defintly one of the above?
Anybody know of a cheaper source for some of these TTY bolts that fit our engine??
Mr. Goodwrench (Shaft) is wanting to get rich of these?
Thanks
