Thats 4100 RPM shift with the pedal on the floor..or close to it anyway. But my shifting is usually top notch at regular driving. I rarely get over 3000 RPM'* anyway

Our cars have the cross hatch warnings beginning at 4950 and go to about 5200. Anything after that I consider RED LINE. I have never reached true red but I have dabbled in the cross hatched area.
Only Jr has achieved 7000RPM and has lived to tell about it

um dude, these motors really are bulletproof...
my brother at his mere 15 years old with all his wisdom got in my car while i was at work once...
my little sister told on him, she said he was seeing how long he could keep the tach at full top end...
he got grounded... and i didnt get to beat him up, but the car ran fine for about 6mo after that "incident"

I had a bad valve or 2... I was tired of trying to figuer out what was wrong with the car so for a few weeks I tried to kill it... I would hold it to the floor and let it redline like crazy.. I even messed with the kickdown cable a bit to get the shifts to hold out longer... I hit 6500 rpms and saw redline a lot.. I thought for sure she was going to go boom sooner or later... I was looking for an excuse to rebuild the engine(or replace it).... Never really got one... These 3800'* are bullet proof.. But in the end I pulled the heads off and had the machine shop rework them so that all of the tollerances would be back to factory specs.. I had come to find that while I was tearing the car apart, I noticed that the rear head had been off of the car before and the non reuseable bolts were streched too far and werent torqued correctly.. I reassembled with new parts( lots of felpro stuff) and new lifters... The car has been great, but the lifters tick too much for my liking... I still have the factory AC delco lifters and I will most likely put them back in...
These are great engines but even 6000 rpms is too much for the older 3800'*.. i think it has more to do with the valvetrain than anything.. But if your not carful theres always a possibility of a dropped valve and damaged piston, or a thrown rod... But for the last couple of years the car has been a great daily driver... I love it...

The old 3800 made its power at like 4400 rpms after that its usually downhill.. But it will wind out quick... Stomp it at 30 mph and it will tag the red line really quick... It did pull a lot stronger once I had the heads done though... Its been the same ever seince... I have gone about 110 mph in the 91 bonneville... I didn't think it would do it, but it sure did... Damn speed governers...
But oh well whats the point of doing 110...mph
