that picture looks exactly like my engine compartment
except mine is uglier
the 8th digit of my VIN is 3
could you mark on that picture, above each connection, which cylinder they go to?

I replaced all my sensors just to be safe when I redid the passenger side of my motor.
Are you sure you have the crank sensor alligned properly with the Harmonic balancer?
I screwed that up the first time and the car would turn over but make a huff huff noise. Sounded kind of like the timing was too far advanced.
Each slot in the sensor should slip have one of the three metal bits of the harmonic balancer running through it.

from what my book says cylinder #3 is on the left (front) bank of the motor yet the first wire there is heading to the right (back) bank...

That'* what mine says too... You're sure those wires on top (firewall side) are going to the rear of the engine, right?
This one has me stumped! My service manual doesn't appear to be adequate with respect to this engine. We need more help!

No, I don't. I pulled that pic off the web. Such a simple problem, but no solution. Someone with a better service manual needs to chime in here.
The other thing you could do is look under the hood of any 87 Bonneville, Delta 88, LeSabre, Electra, Park Ave, or Ninety-Eight.
