Ditto: I can hear my fuel pump from inside of the car if all accesories are off. I don't know what else it could be. I doubt that GM has any secret whirring noise generators hidden under the hood to convince us that we have electronicly assisted brakes.

Actualy the Really Loud pump was in a Fiero. I am hearing impaired so rarely hear anything without augmentation and have no idea what is "normal".
Do not know of any major change in the master cyl for normal brakes (do know our 90 has a wide flat m/c resovoir) but for SSEs (optional in other lines) the ABS was the German TEVES (see picture posted by captainmiller yesterday) from 1988 to 1990 which has an elecrohydraulic pump and was replaced by a more conventional (vaccuum) system in 1991.
If curious, connecting 12v to the loose green connector in front of (or sometimes behind) the air filter box will turn on the fuel pump. Connection was intended to allow easy priming of an empty system.
ps anyone have a strut brace for sale ? Been months since I could get to a yard.

only noises i have heard in mine is the fuel pump and the abs pump, which was more like a buzzing. but i had a bad accumulator also, which could have attributed to the abs pump staying on for so long

I can hear my fuel pump prime when I'm in the car but I know what it should sound like. It'* faint but audible.

Padgett: I have had many occasions where I have had the Fuel Pump Running while I was in the car, under the hood, etc. I can only hear it if I am listening for it [under the hood], and it comes from the Fuel Pressure Regulator, not the pump. And that only occurs right after the pump turns on. It'* pretty quiet, if you ask me.
However, it is strange that the LE/SE'* have an audible pump, while the SSE'* seem not to, or at least have other stuff that drowns out the noise.
