Nope, it'* not that. Randy'* website has the answers you need. The springs which have the lock jump out of the locked posistion break/ fall off, causing the door to not function properly. Removal of the latch, and putting on new springs, fixes this. Or if you use the door a lot, this usually prevents this problem from occuring in the first place.

I vote for the water coming in and getting it all rusty and crappy. When I removed my latches that was the problem, a bit too much rust in there. I will have to do it again sometime but now with winter coming up I better hurry up.

I will be diplomatic and say that everyone is right. The water leaks start the rust, the springs continue to dissolve, then... you can't open the doors. I can see there being various levels of severity with this problem. There probably is no one solution as each condition needs to be diagnosed.
The real solution is to give experience to those that are new to the problem and decide the best way to resolve. We have all had similar yet different problems with our doors. Let'* take it one step at a time and not assume that one fix is it.
That'* ugly alright, but I think mdevour found something similar and came up with another solotion.

i wonder if you can get like a bottle of penetrating oil, and just like soak the hinge in the solution for a week or something. That would fix that thing right up.

That'* exactly how my hinge looked when I yanked it out.
I don't think soaking alone will take care of the problem itself. You'd have to try to take off some of the scale--then soak the hell out of it!! Use something that won't attract dirt to it.
