My uncle use to have a 86 STE, and most of the stuff on it work till it was hit from behind. It even still had the inflater hose in the truck to pump up the tires.

Holy crap, that'* insane. Well, if you can fit a SBC, a 3800 should be a breeze, even in SC form. It would make a heck of a sleeper.

Precisely why I said there'* more room then some are giving credit for. I have the Pontiac Enthusiast magazine issue with the full write up on that swap. Don't care for what he did with the rest of the body, or that he did it to a stripped down model, but oh well. His dime. Problem is, it'* just barely hitting 200 hp, where as my 3.1 turbo swap will be MUCH easier (provided there'* room for the turbo on the side), and will net 205 hp right off the bet, plus a Jeff M chip/K&N filter will get me about 240 hp. Not too shabby. Then there'* still exhaust work, underdrive pullys, etc. And....I can *technically* still call it factory.

I'll bet that the 350 has a slight torque advantage over the turbo 3.1, but still. 200 hp out of a 350 is rather weak by any measure. If you were to do a swap like that at all, you'd think you'd go for an LT1, or at the very least an old TPI engine (worth 240 hp, IIRC).

JMFC - Yeah, I'm sure the V8 has a bit more torque, but the turbo 3.1 at 270 - 275 (with a Jeff M "TopGun" 160 chip) ain't too bad, either. I was wondering the same thing about why he didn't go all out if you're going to go through that much trouble. Who knows.

jr's3800 - lol, yeah, definitely not AWD. It was a base model '86 6000. Only 124 '88 STEs came equipped with AWD as an option, and all 1,376 STEs produced in '89 got them standard. There were an unknown number of SEs built with them in '90 (after the STE package was dropped for the 6000s, and moved to the GPs they were now trying to push) since Pontiac didn't seperate the figures for FWD vs AWD that year, but they were very few nonetheless.. So, you will very rarely come across one. '88 - '91 SSE guys should be able to recognize them easiy if they do, though, on account of how similar the styling ques are (available in only dark sapphire blue, or dark garnet red, gold trim, same trunk key hole cover, same spoiler - but shorter, of course- same seats, set).

Believe it or not, that V8 was mated to the same factory 3-speed THM125C. The guy owns a tranny shop, so he beefed it up himself. I wanted to get in touch with him to see where he got the parts from, and what exactly he did, since I'll have to keep my set-up for the AWD. I know it can be done. The world'* fastest Fiero (running 10s on a BBC ) is still using the same automatic 3-speed!!!

Yup, that'* Jason'* site. He'* got 3 '86 STEs that he'* turning into one good one with an L67 and 5-speed, and one SE AWD that he'* restoring. Use to e-mail each other back and fourth pretty frequently a couple of years ago. Kinda lost touch, now.

Looks expensive, but considering retail was $320 a pop on this dealer only piece, it'* not too bad....especially since you can't get them anymore.
