when the engine immediately died, it smoked like i dropped a few drops of oil on the headers, and i had noticed it was pissing coolant at that point.

Sounds like it punched a hole in the side or head/gasket somewhere.

Typically a large bang is followed by parts coming out the bottom where the oil pan has a new vent in it.

Sounds like something else let go on yours. Any possiblility of an inspection and some pics?

i think rod because the engine will turn over as normal up until a point and then it no longer will turn over.. and it makes a clunk when it hits that non turning point... also when turning it over it sounds like there is a lot of play somewhere in the rotating assembly.

that would mean the bearing on the rod that spun. However if you leaked coolant..I'd be interested to know hwere.

I hope the tranny works in my car. But that just messed up about your car. I would price out the pick and pulls too.

Yeah it sucks, but what can you do? It'* what happens when you screw up, cause a little problem, then push the car a bit too far. In the end though, it'll all be worth it because I will have one killer 3800, learned a lot about engines and transmissions, and gained a lot of skills in the whole process, for not a lot of money.

I just need to start saving up to fix her up.

That'* the right attitude to have. Be careful you don't spend too much though. Everything on a car can be fixed with enough money.

In the spirit of destruction.. there is no destruction without proof. Let'* just say.. if you were skeptical that i threw a rod.. no need to be skeptical any more. It'* true. And not just one, but two.. that'* right two rods.

This is a nice pic of the pan pulled from the engine.. this is what i find.. although all the parts were below the baffle.. i just thought i'd pull some of the stuff out for your viewing pleasure.


Here is a lovely shot of the bottom end. As you can see one rod came totally off the crank, and the other just snapped. You can also notice the big gaping hole in the block. At least the oil is golden-coloured.

These are the only pieces I could find of the block from the big gaping hole. There are a few more, but I can't find them.

Now onto the pics you guys really want..


Bearing piece #1. It'* heavily pitted, and when I say heavily pitted I mean heavily pitted. It looks about like the Earth'* moon.. full of craters with big freakin' holes. It'* also lightly scored and discoloured


Bearing piece #2. Lightly pitted and scored with heavy discolouration. This picture doesn't seem to do quite the justice of how discoloured this sucker is.


A nice chunk of rod, bearing piece 1 and 2 [left to right]. As you can see, #1 is lightly dis coloured and 2'* actual discolouration [that'* what it looks like in real life]. The rod isn't discoloured at all, but for some reason it'* got a couple big craters in it too.


A beautiful photo of my non-vented oil pan. As you can see there are lots of little pieces of metal all in it. You can't see in the pic but the baffle is pretty bent up but still in tact. Overall though the oil pickup and baffle took the beating though. The pickup is trashed.. it'* real bent up [sorry no pics], and the baffle is bent in probably the max it could be bent in without removing whatever exactly holds it on.

Here'* what I can determine from the bearing'* condition.. correct me if i'm wrong here people.

The pitting is from short trips.. my mom drove the car about 2 minutes to work every day for about 2-3 years with the only up to temp driving on weekends.

Discolouration is from the engine overheating heavily at one time.. probably during my ownership of the car. I don't recall the engine ever getting to hot, but you never know.

The scoring is probably when the head gasket blew and the oil was water, which caused metal on metal rubbing to damage the bearing and crank thus lowering the oil pressure. The low oil pressure was probably the circle of death.. and most likely what caused everything to fail.

My guess is the whole thing failed because that bearing failed causing everything to have too much tolerance and eventually grenading the engine.

So for all those out there with 20PSI oil pressure at operating temp [800-1500RPM], be careful, your engine may look like mine in short order.
